Without a clear vision, without reflection, without taking responsibility for our actions, most people and teams are living a “default future” - it might work out, it might not. Take below steps to ensure you and your team are living a created and inspiring future.
WHAT YOU CANNOT SEE, YOU CANNOT GO AFTER.
For individuals:
On a piece of paper, start creating a personal vision that you want to go and grow towards.
Decide on the timeline (in 1 year? in 5 years? when you are 80?)
What would you hope to see? How do you want to feel? How would you want people to describe you? How have you impacted the lives of the people around you? What have you contributed to? What have you done?
Write in positive terms (ie what do you want - not what you don’t want: I want to feel calm vs I don’t want stress). Dream as big as you want. What will you need to say no to in order to succeed? What will you need to say yes to? Remember: the path is not straight - we are not striving for perfection, we are simply striving for a direction to grow consciously towards, little by little. What is your first step?
For teams:
Step 1: Everyone in the team takes 10 minutes to answer following questions individually on paper:
How do you want your team to be?
How do you want your team to communicate?
What is allowed in your team? What is not allowed?
How do you want your team to resolve conflicts?
How do you listen to each other?
How do you understand each other?
What is truly important with regards to your team and how you are together?
Step 2: everyone takes turns to share what they have written - no judgement or interruption from others.
Step 3: work together to write down on a piece of paper your common thoughts. What values are showing up? What key-words have people used? What “rules” do you want to decide on?
Step 4: How will you ensure you will take conscious choices towards these goals? How will you remember them in your everyday?
